Government are prepared to employ 100 men within the next month on railway works at Oarlyle, the Defence Department undertaking to make all arrangements in regard to tenta and rations. The pay will he—for single men 21s per week of forty-eight hours, married men 283. From their earnings Is 3 J per day will be deducted from each man, and 15s per week for the maintenance of the families of married men. Government does not undertake to give constant work. The contract for the construction of the railway and wharf works at Ca.-lyle, to cost £17,000, has been let to a Dunedin firm, and the men are to have an opportunity of getting employment under the contractors if they like. Several leading members of the Opposition have expressed regret to Mr Hirst for the attack on him last night. The general feeling is that he came out of the fray in an honorable and creditable manner. The Maori Prisoners BUI is likely to be very fiercely attacked by certain sections of the House to-morrow. The Printing Committee recommends the printing of the Maori members' speeches in the Native language for circulation among the Natives of the colony.
