HIS HONOR AND BIJAH.
The other day Bijah had a call from a stranger in distress. He aaid he was a stranger from far-off Colorado, and that he had lost his dear wife. Bijah felt sorry for him. He added that his seven children were taken with scarlet fever the same day, and in a week were buried in the same grave. Bijah felt more sorry. He further added that he left for the East with 10,000 dollars in his pocket, but he was robbed in Denver, abused in Omaha, and imprisoned in Chicago, and now he was in Detroit without money or friends, and as hungry as a wolf. Tears stood in his eyes as he took a silver dollar from the old janitor and started off to get food. Two hours later he was brought back to the station roaring drunk, and he called Bijah an old eap-bucket with the top hoop knocked off. He was the first prisoner out. The bird of sorrow roooted on his brandy-red nose, and his eyes looked disconsolate. "So you took in Bijah, did you?" queried the Court. " Sir, I am an unfortunate man," responded the prisoner ss he blew his nose with a loud snort. " You had pretty good luck in crying Bijah out of a dollar yesterday." " I'm going to pay it back as soon as I strike a job. Oh! sir, don't consign me to a dungeon grim—- " To a dungeon grim, with grated door, And dreary wall and cold stone floor ; Where naught is heard but the keeper's tread As he guards the men who had better bo dead." "No, I won't do that," replied hi 3 Honor, " I'll make it sixty days—- " In a sunny cell on the second tier, Where things are merry and never drear ; Where the call of tho keeper is soft and low, As he asks you down to your hash to go." "I druther not, Judge." " But I druther you would." And he did.
