BOARD OF CONSERVATORS.
A meeting of the South Waimakariri Board of Conservators was held at noon to-day. Present—Mr B. J. S. Harman (chairman), Mr J. N. Toss will, Mr O’Callaghan, and the lHayor of Christchurch. The Chairman reported that the intention to strike the rate had not yet been notified, in consequence of the rolls not having come up. This nad now been done, and the notice would be issued. Respecting the loan of £3OOO from the College, he had made an offer to the acting chairman to continue tfie loan at 8 per cent, for three years. With regard to the reserves of the Board, he hod to report that the Crown grants were complete for signature, except the placing of the plans on the copies. As regarded the acceptance of tenders for cement, the Mayor of Christchurch and himself had accepted Mr Turner’s tender for 500 casks at 20a 2d, delivered at the Aylesbury station. As regarded the tenders for the embankment, there were a great number of tenders, and great disparity of price. The Mayor and himself had accepted the lowest tender, subject to inquiry. These appeared to be satisfactory, and the contract was aigned. Subsequently it was found that the contractor had broken down. Now he had before him an offer from Q-. Clark and Co. to take up the contract at the price originally accepted by the Mayor and Himself, and / had brought the matter before the PTfioard. , The contractor proposing to take over the contract waited on the with reference to the same, and, after some little discussion, it was agreed to call for fresh tenders for the work, to be sent in on Monday, July 19th. Tenders to be accompanied by a deposit of £lO. A letter was read from the Government informing the Board that they had temporarily reserved certain land over which certain pre-emptive rights existed for purposes connected with the erection of protective works at the Waimakariri. It was resolved that a return be prepared showing the number of holdings comprised in the lands about to be Crown granted to the Board, and also that a sketch plan should be made of the same. _ It was resolved that the chairman, Mr Duncan, and the Mayor of Christchurch, be empowered to accept any tenders sent in for the embankment at the Waimakariri. The Overseer of the Works waited on the Board and stated that there was nothing particular to report as to the state of the river. The willows were being put in as fast as they came up. He had covered several groynes a chain apart, and was now beginning to carry out a system of covering groynes half a chain apart. The Chairman said that this was very satisfactory. In reply to the Mayor, The Overseer said there was a little water in the river on Sunday and Monday, but' nothing to speak of. There had been no fresh. It was resolved that the overseer he autho- , yiaed to have the well filled up, and drive a j pipe through into the bottom of the well. ] It was resolved that the chairman, Mr A. ( Duncan, and the Mayor of Christchurch be ( authorised to sign the rate roll for the current ( year, and to notify the rata to be struck, such rats to bo payable on and after July 31st, ( 1880. I
