THE LONDON “PRESS.”
Speaking of the new paper which Mr Greenwood, late editor of the “Pall Mall Gazette,” is to start, a London correspondent says: prietor will be Lord Stratheden and Campbell, and it will have a strong backing among tho Jingo party. The ‘ nobbling ’ of tho « Pall Mall " was a decided mistake, and I understand that the circulation has fallen off materially since the new management took it in hand. The transformation is being effected -gradually and with caution, the direction it is taking being toward philosophical Radicalism. Mr Arthur Arnold, who retires from the “ Echo ” in a very similar way to what Mr Greenwood has left the “ Pall Mall,” will be the ultimate editor. Tho Liberal party will ■stand in future much better with the London Press than it has done for the last six years. The “ Times ” has veered round, and the “ Daily Telegraph ” will ere long be grovelling at the feet of its original but once repudiated idol. Two out of the •four evening papers will bo Liberal, and, of course, the bulk of the weeklies are Gladstonian. I have heard rumors about the startdug of a new Conservative morning paper."
