THE PROPERTY TAX.

We have been requested to publish the following copy of a letter received from the Hon. John Hall, in answer to the resolutions sent to him which wore passed at a public meeting, held at Leeston, on the 25th June : Government House, Wellington, 29th June, 1830. Sir, —I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 25th instant, forwarding resolutions passed at a meeting of ratepayers held in the Town Ha'l, Leeston. I am glad to find that, generally, the course adopted by the present Government meets with the approval of the ratepayers. I will lay the resolutions before Government. Meanwhile I may inform you that alterations are contemplated in the schedule under the Property Tax Act, which will obviate any cause for complaint on the ground of the alleged inquisitorial character of the tax. The second resolution not being quite clear as to the personal properties which it recommends should be exempted, I should be glad if you would inform me whether such exemption is advocated for the stock-in-trade and buildings, &c., in which the capital of merchants, manufacturers, and others is often principally invested. I am glad to find the meeting approves of the discontinuance of subsidies to local bodies. I am, &0., John Hall. To Mr John Rennie, Chairman of the meeting. Leeston, 6th July, 1830. The Hon. John Hall, M.H.K., Wellington. Sir, —Referring to your letter re resolutions passed at the meeting of ratepayers held in the Town Hall, Leeston, on the 25th nit., I have the honor to state for your information that the general feeling of the said meeting with regard to the second part of the resolution was that all personal property included in schedule 3 of the Act should be exempt, and that merchants, mannfactnrora, and others should be taxed in somewhat same way as they are at present by the Road Boards, I have, &c., John Rennie, Chairman of meeting.
