[fbbss association, i AUCKLAND, Jnljß. The Mail. The City of Sydney, with the London mails of June 17oh, left San Francisco on the 4th inst., the day before contract time. The Wangarei Shooting Case. In the Wangarei shooting case the jury, after being locked up all night, came into court and said they could not agree. The prisoner said he desired to be honorably acquitted, and demanded a third trial. Bigamy. Lawlor pleaded guilty to bigamy, and was sentenced to twelve months. WELLINGTON, July 8. A Horsewhipping Case. At the Magistrates' Court this morning Robert Atkinson, formerly a Customs officer at the Thames, and a well-known petitioner to the House of Representatives, was charged with horsewhipping Mr McKellar, the Collector of Customs here, in the Custom-house this morning. The supposed cause is connected with some evidence given before a select committee, and with a view to bring the whole matter regarding the accused before the public. Criminal Sessions. The jury in the case of Wilson, for indecent assault, was locked up all night, and discharged this morning without a verdict. The prisoner will be tried again on Monday. The charge for false pretences against S. W. Jackson is proceeding. TIMABU, July 8. A Prosperous ConcernThe £IO,OOO worth of debentures issued by theTimaru Building Society to the Harbor Board have been fully liquidated, and, despite damaging statements recently made, the financial affairs of the society are understood to be satisfactory and prosperous. Bepresentations have been made by the Southland Volunteer officers on the subject of the capitation allowance, several being liable to Banks and private firms, to a considerable amount for uniforms, &c. The debts incurred wore owiDg to the inadequacy of the present capitation, and on the faith of its continuance. AUCKLAND, July 7. Criminal SessionsA true bill was found against Coombs for embracery. In the case of the robbery of the mail.bag the Grand Jury made a presentment condemning the carelessness with which mail bags are carried. NAPIEE, July 7. Sporting. The Jockey Club Spring meeting has been altered from the 7th to the sth October, in consequence of the Agricultural Society having fixed the 6th and 7ih for their Bhow. Mr Allan McLean has sold the well-known entire Patriarch to two Wanganui gentlemen. The Mchaka DiggingsSome stone alleged to be taken from one of the Mohaka claims has yielded at Auckland nearly five ounces of gold to the ton. On the other hand, some stone taken from the same claim and leaders by the " Herald " repre« sentative haß been mo3t carefully tested, but does not show'even a trace of gold. Io spite of the warnings repeatedly given, miners are continuing to arrive. It is useless for tmy one but prospectors to come, and they must be prepared to rough it, the country being very rough and broken, and anything but pleasant during winter. WELLINGTON, July 7. KUMABA, July 7. The Mining AccidentThe action of the Government in irstructing the Engineer-in-Charge of Goldfields to aftord wtiat assistance was necessary for the recovery of the bodies of the men buried in the sludge channel meets with approbation. At a meeting of miners last night it was resolved to volunteer to give one man from every claim on the field to form shifts for the recovery of the bodies. Operations commenced early this morning, and will continue until the men are found. From the dangerous nature of the ground it will probably be a week before they are able to arrive at the spot where the men are supposed to be killed. The contractor's loss is estimated at £SOO through the accident occurring, as it involves a new shaft and the removal of all the machinery. TIMABU, July 7. DUNEDIN, July 7. Eoslyn Tramway. The first sod of the Boslyn tramway was turned to-day. Beery Statistics The total quantity of beer brewed in Dunedin last year was 1,287,000 gallons. EducationalTho returns of the Otago Education Board for the quarter ending June 30th show that there were 151 sohools in operation, employ, ing 236 mole and 164 female teachers, making a total of 400, besides nineteen teachers of sewing. The number of soholars on the roll at the beginning of the quarter waß 17,836, and at the end of the quarter 18,976, consisting of 9797 boya and 9179 girls. The average attendance for the quarter was 8048 boys and 7281 girls, moking ;a total of 15,327, being a decrease of 145 on tho preceding quarter. Five new sohools were opened during the winter.
