SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Sydenham Borough Council was held yesterday evening at the usual hour. There were present —His Worship the Mayor, Ors. Andrew, Pavitt, Hall, Joyce, White, Shierlaw, Nichol. A letter was received from the Colonial Secretary, notifying the validation of the burgcss-list of the borough of Sydenham. In reference to the Town belt petition, which came up at the last meeting, letters of acknowledgment were read from the city members.

Mr W, W. Charters, hon, see. to the Industrial Exhibition committee, wrote forwarding tickets to the Council for the Exhibition. It was resolved that the letter be received and acknowledged with thanks. A letter was read from Mr Coates, applying for a renewal of the permission granted for a siding from the railway to his property. On the motion of Or. Joyce it was resolved that the application be granted, subject to certain conditions to bo approved by the works committee.

A letter from Messrs Hudson, Riddley and Co. anent tho use of gas oil, was referred to the lighting committee. Somo discussion arose on a letter requesting the Council to remove tho bathing sheds near Mr Anderson’s property, and it was agreed that tho works committee be requested to remove the bathing sheds within a fortnight from the present date. A letter from Mr Doran and others, residents on the Devon road, re shingling, was read. Or. White explained that delay had occurred in consequence of a question of boundary having arisen, and on that being settled tho work would be proceeded with. The letter was referred to the works committee.

The works committee reported that they had accepted Mr Charles O’Mally’s tender for

I the construction of private streets in rural section No. 74 at the sum of £2BO 7s sd, and | that the work was being carried out, and the tender of Messrs Waite and Meares for metal at 4s per yard. They also recommended the calling for tenders for the supply of shingle, and referred an application from Mr Coates re railway siding to the Council. Or. White pointed out that the last clause of the report had already been dealt with. The report was then adopted. The sanitary committee submitted a report in reference to operations connected with their department, and on the motion of Cr. Andrew, the report was adopted. In connection with a clause in the above report, a letter complaining of a nuisance in a drain off Gasworks road, was considered. The letter pointed out that the nuisance arose from escaped fgas from the gas works. The Mayor corroborated the assertion as to the gravity of the nuisance, and he thought prompt notion should be taken in the matter. Or. Joyce moved—“ That the inspector be instructed to visit the places referred to, and take notion immediately.” The finance committee reported as follows —Receipts, £123 Is 8d ; accounts for payment, £415 14s fid; credit balance at the Bank, £lOl3 5s 7d. The report was received and adopted. The sub-committee appointed in reference to the South town belt quention reported on the action they had taken, including the sending of the town clerk to Wellington for the purpose of advancing the interests of this borough in regard to representation and other matters, showing that the result of his visit was generally of a satisfactory character. The report was approved. As a matter arising out of the report, Or. White moved—“ That this Council deems it necessary, subject to the approval of the Drainage Board, to proceed at once with the preparation of a Bill to be submitted to Parliament during the present session, to give to Sydenham a rep-esentative on the Drainage Board.”

The motion was carried, and a sub-com-mittee was appointed to wait upon the Drainage Board in the matter. An application (in person) was made by Mr Dunn, who had failed to carry out his contract under the Council, for the return of his deposit-money, £6 10s. He pointed out that his mates had not kept faith with him, the tender being so low. On the motion of Mr Joyce it was resolved that under the peculiar circumstances of the case, the deposit should bo returned.

A discussion arose as to the constitution of the Waimakariri Board of Conservators as affecting Sydenham.

Cr, White moved —“ That should the Bill before Parliament to alter the constitution of the South Waimakariri Board of Conservators, not provide for Sydenham being represented on the Board, our members be requested to have a clause inserted giving to Sydenham two members, and that this Council does not approve of a nominated Board.” The motion was carried unanimously. The question of erecting a lamp in Harper street was referred to the lighting committee. A letter was read from Mr P. W. Stevens, offering his services to raise £60,000 loan for the borough in the London market, enclosing testimonials.

Resolved that the letter bo received and acknowledged. Having transacted some routine business the Council adjourned.
