SERIOUS MINING ACCIDENT.
[PBE PSESS ASSOCIATION’ SPECIAL WIPE ] KUMAEA. July 5. Just before 5 o’clock, a serious accident occurred at Maher’s new shaft, Larrikins’ Shaft. Five men, consisting of the three brothers Chalmers and Cummings and another, had just gone down, when a fall set in, the drive gave way, and the stuff at once ran back to the shaft and up that about 50£t, completely cutting off all escape for those below. A large number of miners soon congregated, and immediately commenced operations for the recovery of the men, but the shaft has to be battened preparatory to taking out the stuff, which is now being done. The cage was fortunately up at the time, and is now available for the working party, who can descend about 70ft. Three of the men have been spoken to through an air pipe, hut they cannot account for the other two. Should all go well the men may he rescued in three days. In the meantime no exertions aro being spared by the contractors and the miners in attempting their rescue.
