THE ENGLISH MARKETS.
The following is Messrs Miles Bros, and Co.'s Colonial Produce Report, dated London, May 20th : wool.. There was rather an inanimate feeling in the trade immediately prior to the Whitsuntide holidays—for which the sales were suspended from the 15th to the 18th inst. —and prices rnled about on a par with March rates, crossbreds excepted, which were quoted lower, but on their being resumed yesterday a better tone was noticeable, the biddings showing more spirit, and our home trade operating rather more freely than they had hitherto done. By the advices received this morning from France, there appears to be a disposition on the part of the mill owners in the woollen districts there to come to some arrangement with the men. The present series of sales has been curtailed, and will now close on the Bth instead of the 12th June. The arrivals for the August sales are— Bales. New South Wales and Queensland 10,587 Victoria 15,008 South Australia 7,905 Tasmania 3,462 New Zealand ... 19,131 Cape 17,620 Total 73,713 WHEAT AND TLOUK. Our wheat market has been rathsr firm during the past fortnight, a revival of the Continental has been dull during the last few days. There have been no sales of importance to record, except a parcel of about 100 tons potatoes, which were placed at 45s to 47s 6d per ton.
