NATIVE INTELLIGENCE.

fSY Teleobaph.] fFEOM OUB OWN COBEE3PONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Juno 30. The Government have received telegrams to-day from Colonel Roberts at the Constabulary Camp opposite Parihaka, stating that the Maoris have requested the constabulary ‘fa; assist them in fencing along the side of the new road to protect their cultivations from trespassing cattle. The Natives, who are very cheerful, and friendly in demeanour and moderate in tone, without any symptoms of sulkiness, say they would willingly do the fencing themselves if there were tim 5, but that they could not unaided erect a fonc J soon enough to guard their young wheat, a considerable area of which is being sown. The chief difficulty lies in the distance from which the timber would havo_ to be fetched. The matter, however, is still under negotiation between Colonel Roberts _ and Te Whiti's private secretary, and a satisfactory arrangement is anticipated.. The Natives were to have had a conference yesterday with Colonel Roberts to discuss the matter, but the heavy rain which fell incessantly put a stop to the meeting, which probably will take place to-morrow. Thero is no sign yet of Mr Hamlin, who is said to bo enjoying himself at the West Coast, but to have made no progress towards discovering the “Lyttelton Times” swamp, which has become a standing joke in the lobbies against its imaginative creator.
