NATIVE INTELLIGENCE.

Much sensation was created to-day by the suddon departure of Mr Bryce by the Hiriemoo, for Taranaki, and exaggerated reports were afloat that war was imminent, j The real fact ia aa follows : —A small party of Natives persist in erecting a fence across the Constabulary road, nearly opposite the barracks. This has been done several time?, the natives rebuilding the fenco as often as it was moved by the constabulary. It was repeated yes! erday, and the Natives refuse to explain why, end it was therefore thought desirab'o that the Native Minister should go at once and ascertain the real meaning of the obstruc ion, which, if permitted, will involve the Government prestige. If it arises from any misunderstanding, that can be corrected ; but if it means resistance to road making, then without using any unnecessary violence, the obstructive Maoris will be quietly put a?ide and the work proceeded with. Although th j position is somewhat delicate, and ne ds careful treatment, there is no apprehension of any violence or other serious result, and in any case it is thought that Mr Bryce, if present, would be able at once to deal with any difficulty, and prevent its development. A telegram from Mr Parris this I evening treats the affair very lightly. He does not apprehend any tronble.
