POPULAR LECTURES.

The first of the series of popular lectures in connection with the Philosophical Institute, to he given during the next six months, was held in the Science Lecture Theatre, Canterbury College, last evening, commencing at eight o’clock. Thera were about sixty persons present, including a number of ladies. Mr Inglis occupied the chair, and briefly introduced the lecturer, Professor Hutton, F.G.S., 0.M.Z.5., whose subject was “ The Origin of Living Matter.” The lecture was delivered in a manner calculated to enlist the attention of the audience, who evinced a strong interest in the subject. At its conclusion, Mr George Grey, bon. secretary, announced that the next lecture of the series would be given on July 15th. “ On the Progress of Modern Photography,” by Mr IN’. K. Cherrill.
