CATHEDRAL GUILD.

A general meeting of the Cathedral Guild was held in St. Michael’s Schoolroom last evening, the Very Rev. the Dean of Christchurch presiding. The chairman expressed regret that there was a small attendance, but remarked that the great practical interest evinced, and the wonderful progress made of late in forwarding the structure, left no room for discouragement. The east and west end of the nave were nearly completed, forty or fifty artisans being employed on the masonry and carpentery work, so that the contract would probably be completed before the stipulated time in May. Orders had been sent Home for glass windows, fittings, &c., but the most important announcement he had to make was that tenders were about to be called to build the north-west tower, one of their oldest residents, Mr R. H. Rhodes, having generously provided funds for the purpose. Such beneficence was a matter for congratulation, but still a considerable sum more would be required to meet the liabilities incurred for the construction of the nave. _ It was proposed to make some little alterations in the doorway, and also an ornamental addition to the tower. Another magnanimous offer of the spire and bells was also anticipated. The Dean, whoso remarks elicited pleasing manifestations from his hearers, then read a short paper, the object of which proposed to form a working company of the Guild. In it he pointed out a field of moral labor lor its members j suggested visits to the hospital, gaol, and suchlike institutions; efforts to promote temperance and Christianity, and affording advice, with assistance, to members of the Church who were strangers in the land. The proceedings were diversified by selections of music rendered by the Guild choir, a reading by Mr D. Rohertdn,- and the ordinary services at Guild meetings.
