NEWS OF THE DAY.

R.M. Couet. —The business at the R.M. Court this morning was brief. On the police side the only name on the charge-sheet, was that of Walter Hardy, the offence charged against him being one of indecent exposure in Colombo street on Sunday afternoon. Accused, who had been admitted to bail, appeared in Court in a state of semi-intoxica-tion, and when called upon to plead, made some incoherent observations, which induced the Bench to forthwith commit him to twenty-four hours’ imprisonment for contempt of Court; the original charge to be board against him on the following day. There were no civil oases. Mr Q-. Leslie Lee, Mr R. Wcstonra, and his Worship the Mayor presided. St. Pateick's Hall.—We beg to call attention to the fact that the concert in aid of the Hibernian brass band, will be held in the above hall this evening, the performance commencing at 8 o’clock.

This society has been formed in connection with the Colombo road church. The following are the officers for tho ensuing year:—President, Rev. A duet by Miss E. Clifford and C. Corkory was re-demanded, and the Fire King in his performances received quite an ovation. La Petite Sophie sang two Dutch songs very nicely indeed, and the Eastern Brothers, Messrs Shaw and Mitchell, who kindly assisted, were well received. Mr Gtreen presided in the orchestra with ability. Kaiapoi Borough Council Election.— A notification appears in to-day’s issue, postponing the nomination and election of two councillors. The nominations were to have been sent in by noon to-day, but in consequence of the questions raised in reference to ouster of two members, alluded to yesterday, a legal opinion is being taken on the point, and in the meantime, as tho election might complicate matters, it has been indefinitely postponed. It is probable that the councillors intended to bo ousted will bo called on to show cause before the Resident Magistrate’s Court on Monday next. Inquest at Raeaia.—An inquest touching the death of Charles McCarthy was held at. tho Railway Hotel, Rakaia, on Wednesday, before J. E. Trevor, E-q , coroner for the dis trict. Some variations took place in thejprogramme, owing to the illness of Miss Boag, who was unable to appear. Taken as a whole, the concert was not so successful, musically speaking, as was anticipated, though some of the items wore fairly rendered. A gentleman from Lyttelton sang “ Killarney,” but was evidently under the impression that the spirited Irish melody was a dirge, and sang it accordingly. The two most enjoyable items of the programme were the trio, flute, piano and violin, of the Masters Herman, and Sohodorf’s “When the quiet Moon is Beaming,” by Mrs Corrick.
