ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL. The usual monthly meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council was hold last Monday evening. The Mayor stated that his interview with the County Council resulted in his having to get a return of all the land sold within the borough. If the County Council did not entertain their claim they would fall back on the Longbeach Road Board. The committee appointed to report on the water pipes recommended the Council to appoint a deputation to wait upon the County Council to endeavor to obtain their consent to the sale of the pipes. If their consent is obtained, a portion of the money derived from the sale should bo applied towards completing the water supply and drainage scheme now in hand. The balance, if any, to be placed in the bank, the interest to be added to the principal until the whole can be judiciously expended for the purposes originally intended. The Mayor was deputed to wait on the Council. With regard to the water works it was resolved—“ That the contractor be informed that unless the work is finished by the end of this week steps will be taken to finish it at his expense, and enforce the penalty.” It was also resolved to sell the I immigration cottages, and some other business having been transacted the Council adjourned.
