PUBLIC MEETING AT LITTLE RIVER.

A public meeting of the residents of Little Bivcr hold at the schoolroom on Saturday evening last, the sth instant, to consider the position of the recreation ground and the necessity of fencing the cemetery ground forthwith. Mr A. D. Allan was voted to the chair.

The Chairman having read the notice convening the meeting, said he understood that the recreation ground committee had entered into arrangements with Mr William Wilson for the purchase of eight acres of land adjoining the cemetery ground at £7 per acre. He thought that the recreation committee, before entering into any such arrangements for the purchase of the land, ought to called a public meeting, so as to get an opinion as to whether the site was a suitable one or not. It was not too late for the meeting to pass a resolution as to the suitability of the site or not. The public had no real knowledge of what the recreation ground committee had done. After some discussion it was moved by Mr N. Walters, seconded by Mr W. Johnson, and carried unanimously—“ That this meeting is of opinion that the site proposed to bo purchased from Mr W. Wilson for recreation grounds is not in any way suited, and that its proximity to the cemetery forms an insuperable bar," It was moved by Mr J. Olphert, seconded by Mr John Radford, jun., and carried unanimously :—“That an endeavor be made _to obtain the abandoned railway reserve running through section No. —, between Maori Jack’s land and While’s Mill.”

It was resolved, “ That a copy of the foregoing resolutions be sent to the chairman of the recreation ground committee, and also to the chairman of the Akaroa County Council.”

Wi’h regard to the cemetery, the Chairman stated that the contract for fencing in the cemetery ground had been let some time ago, but as yet nothing had been done. He supposed because the recreation ground had not yet been surveyed. It was proposed by Mr P. F. Balfe, seconded by Mr N. Walters, and carried unanimously—“ That in the opinion of this meeting the unfenoed condition of the cemetery is a standing disgrace to those who have been entrusted with the management, the more so, that the funds for the same are in hand and the contract let.”

It was proposed by Mr W. Johnson, seeondod by Mr Wm. Joblin, and carried unanimously held in a fortnight’s time, and if the fencing is not in a forward state the stumbling black be removed by resignation or otherwise.” Copies of the foregoing resolutions were ordered to be sent to the chairman of the Cemetery Board, and, after a vote of thanks to the chairman, the meeting terminated.
