[By Tkleqbaph.] [Via Bussell.] A further extension of the Great Western Bailway, viz., from Orange to Wellington, of fifty-six miles, was formally opened on the Ist inat. The total distance from Sydney is 247 miles. Two prisoners who unaccountably escaped from gaol at Port Macquarrie have been recaptured. A third is at large. Further disclosures in connection with the deficiencies in the ticket department of the Exhibition are foreshadowed. The “ Daily Telegraph’ ’ throws strong double on the assumption that Port Briton, for which, the Genii steamer was cleared, was in New Ireland. It offers the opinion that it is intended to occupy by force and colonise all that portion of Western Australia north of Perth. It publishes a full translation of the original prospectus to that effect. YIOrOEIA. The Works Department purposes constructing a tramway to Sandridge to give employment to the unemployed; also covering the hills with clay and otherwise improving the locality. In the liquidation of the Surburban Bank,. Suewright the contractor’s amount of overdraft was found to be about £15,000. A libel action has taken place between the rival editors of the Cnlao papers. The editor of the “ Herald” charged the editor of the “Eeformer” wiith having formerly, as Madame Janin’s check agent, committed sundry offences. He represented him as a prisoner in gaol with his hair cropped, and made other similar insinuations. The latter claimed £ISOO damages. A verdict was given for £250. It is stated that £64,000 has lapsed to the Government, owing to certain religions bodies not taking up the grant in aid. It has been resolved to experimentally establish a grain exchange at Collingwood. A policeman has been arrested for a robberyin a house of ill-fame. A young woman has been admitted into the hospital suffering from poison taken in infant food, colonially made. It is stated that the Kellys have frequently been seen in the Strathbogie ranges. It is believed that Kate Kelly supplies them with provisions. The body of a man, shot through the head, was found in the Cemetery Eeserre, with a revolver by his side and a paper signed John Mailer. At a meeting of licensed victuallers a resolution was carried adverse to the granting of licenses to single women. Fresh cases of death from diphtheria are reported from the country districts. The estate of the late rabbi Bentel was sworn under five thousand pounds. It is rumored that the medical profession intend to investigate the value of the diplomas held by two prominent doctors at Oldbourne. The position of the Government is believed to be weakened by the Beform debate. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. Daylis and McLean have'brought an .action against Williamson, the actor, for slander ; £IOOO damages are claimed. A man named McPherson, has been arrested on a charge of escaping the police fourteen years ago, when he was being taken to gaol under a conviction for hone stealing. Mr Stock, one of the stewards of the Adelaide Bacing Club, has served a writ on behalf of Mr McLaughlin for £IOOO, being the value of the Birthday Gup Stakes, and which was paid to Banter. QUEENSLAND, Mr Jack, the Government geologist, hasbeen instructed to make a'geological survey of the Hodkinson goldfield. . A full Court upheld the conviction of • Gomez, found guilty of murder at Thursday Island, Torres Straits, holding that the Court had jurisdiction. Justice Luteryohet has a month’s leave, owing to failing health. Three small wooden shops in Queen street have been burnt. The New Zealand Insurance Company has £4OO on one. In the case of Brooks versus Swanwick, a barrister, in which a verdict for the plaintiff was given tantamount to perpetration of malpractice by the defendant, a new trial has been granted.
