Local Boabd op Health.—A meeting of the L"cal Board of Health followed that of tho Drainage Board last night, when permission was given to Mr Albert Moll to establish a tannery at Woolston, subject to revocation at any time.

City Aupitot-s.—The : poling for the City Auditors commenced this morning. Thore was not a largo amount of interest evinced, as up to noon but a fow votes wore recorded. The declaration will probably be made tomorrow.

iThkatee Koyal.—" The Roeo of Ettrick Vale " and "Our Boys" formed the bill at the Theatro Koyal last night. Tho same programme will be repeated this evening. Not a Cbiminal Lawyer.—During the hearing of an important case on Monday, at tho Kaiapsi KM. Court, Mr Spackman, counsel on one side, referred to Mr Joynt on the other side as a celebrated criminal lawyer. The latter gentleman smartly retorted that the appellation was misapplied, and by his ready wit provoked tho risibilities of those within heaving. CONGEBGATIOJTAL ChUBOH, EbBBY KOAr. —ln connection with the reopening of the above ohuroh, under the ministry of the Rev. S. Slocombe, a social tea meeting was held on Thursday evening lost. About 200 persons eat down to a varied and sumptuous tea, provided by the liberality of the friends in the locality. A public meeting was afterwards held, Mr J. P.* Jameson in the chair. Addresses of congratulation and of general praotical interest were delivered by the Revs. S. Slocombe and H. Williams, and Mr Mariner. The building was well filled, and the hearty interest of all concerned in tho proceedings seemed to augur well for the future of this church.

Thu New Dbaiwagb Bill.—The Drainage Board at their meeting yesterday resolved not to preEson the Amended'Drainago Bill against which so much opposition has been manifested. It was suggested that the clauses giving additional representation to Sydenham should be retained, but after some discussion it was decided tbat it could not bo doue, as fresh notice would have to be given so as to include the Avon district, but that the Board were in favor of inoreased representation being granted to both districts. During the course of tho discusoion it was pointed out that Sydenham had now representatives on the Board in the persons of Messrs Duncan and Tancred.

Farming at Home.—-In spite of tho loeses of farmers (says an English paper), it appears that the area of land under cultivation continues to increase. In Great Britain the area returned as under cul'ivation has increased by 121,000 acres since 1878, and by 264,000 aoroß •ince 1877 ; and the total inorease in the tea years ending with 1879 is no less than 1,637,000 acres, or about the same area as the whole of Devonshire. Of this inorease rather more than two-thirds, or 1,134,000 acres, was in England, 228,000 aores in Wales, and 275,000 acres in Sootlaud,

Cur Council.—The ordinary meeting of the Council wus held last evening, when a good deal of business was disposed of. Among the matters considered was the question at issue between the Board of Health re the sanitary works of the city, and the Council mo'ved to relinquish all sanitary matters and work connected therewith in the city. A report of the proceedings appears elsewhere. Waimatb Steeplechases.— The following are the acceptances for the Waitnate Handicap Steeplechase:—Lone Hand, Royalty, Clarence, Stella, Zetland, Ivanhoe, Naumai, Miss Hucgerford, Shillelagh, G-rey Momus and li'ch Lomond. Tub Rbcebt Public Meetings. The Drainage Board had under consideration y slord ay tho resolutions passed at the recent meeting at Sydenham, and also received a deputation representing the Bingsland ratepayers. With regard to the former, it was resolved to acknowledge the receipt of the letter. In respect to the Bingslaad meeting, the engineer waß directed to report on the best means of giving the relief sought by the district, and a committee of the Bourd was 'tlso appointed, personally to inspect the locality whero tho flooding complained of had taVen place.

Fobsign Dbain Pipes.—At the usual meeting of the Drainage Board yostetd'y, Mr Duncan brought before the Board the statement which had been made in two papers that the engineer received 5 per cent, commission on all contracts for imported drain pipes. Mr Ball gave the statement an unqualified denial, characterising it as a falsehood. Spobting. Vital Statistics.—There were 180 births, 51 marriages and 59 deaths registered for Ghristchurch and district during the month ended yesterday. In the corresponding month last year the numbers were : —Births, 158 ; mavriagea, 36; deaths, 61. The Union Steamship Company.—The proposed chaoge of making the Chrhtehuro'i cfß.se of this company the head office for the port and tho city, has been carried into effect. The company however still retain an office at Lyltelton, and have established telephonic communication between the two. St. Mast's, Addington.—The entertainment announced to tie held took place in the schoolroom on Friday evening last. The juggling tricks by the well-known amateur conjuror created great amusement, and were very well executed. The performance was accompanied by selections on the pianoforte. It 19 purposed to hold monthly entertainments in the schoolroom during the winter. The Dbt/ids.—An adjourned meeting of the above Order was held last night, at the Wellington Hotel, for the purpose of making arrangements for opening a Lodge at Rangiora, Bro. Swinnerton, D.P., in the ohair. It was decided to accept the loan of thirty torches for tho procession. It was resolved that a epeoial train be engaged, and that the members leavo Christchuroh at 6.30 sharp on Thursday, Juno 10th.

PHiixirSTcrwir Congbbgatiohaii Sunday Sohooc.—The first of a series of entertainments in connection with the above was given in the schoolroom on Tuesday evening last. The programme included vooal solos by Mrs Hart, Miss Button, and Messrs Joseph and Newman, vocal duets by the Misßes Inglis, instrumental selections by Messrs Knight and Jameson and Miss Inglis, and glees by the choir, under tho leadership of Mr Knight. The entertainment, which wao a very successful one, was further diversified by a rending by tho Rev. S. Blocombe and a recitation by Mr Newman.
