THE FIRST INTRODUCTION OF TROUT TO NEW ZEALAND.
TO THB EDITOR OP THE PRESS. Sib, —As my affectionate friend, Mr Farr, haa again brought up this subject, in a manner calculated to deceive the public, please allow me to state, that the expense incurred by myself in obtaining the trout ova from Tasmania was £7O, within a few shillings, towards which only £3 was actually contributed by the Acclimatisation Society. I volunteered to go at my own expense, because the Society had decided to decline Dr. Officer’s offer on account of not having sufficient funds. From the three fish hatched out, some thousands wore ultimately reared. I gave the Society all the credit of the in froduction, and should probably never have claimed the honor had I not been driven, in self-defence, by the continued misrepresentations of my jealous friend. I also claim to have first introduced the English perch and the valuable American brook trout, and would, probably, have imported other useful varieties of fish, and carried out my fishpropagating business on a far larger scale, had it not been for the competition and obstruction of the Acclimatisation Society. I allude to this as an instance how unjust and detrimental it is that public money should be expended in competing with and injuring private enterprise. Tours, &c., A. M. Johnson.
