THE NEWFOUNDLAND FISHERIES QUESTION.
Latest English intelligence informs us that correspondence of considerable importance has taken place between the British ireeretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Secretary Ewarts, on the Newfoundland fisheries question. The late English Secretary, the Marquis of Salisbury, denied that there were any grounds for the demand made for compensation on behalf of the American fisheries, and gave his views on the subject at considerable length. In reply, Secretary Ewarts entirely repudiated the view of the English Secretary of State, and further, in a letter to President Hayes, urges that the United States Government would be justified in adopting retaliatory measures in defence of the rights of the American fishermen. This serious declaration on the part of Secretary Ewarts has excited a somewhat sensational interest in America, and created considerable surprise in England. The policy of the Liberal Government on the subject is looked forward to with unusual anxiety.
