THE FROLIQUES.
Mr Simonson's Froliques opened their season at the Oddfellows’ Hall very successfully last evening. The entertainment is an exceedingly pleasing one throughout, possessing the merit of being new in its features, and clover in the performance of the items on the programme by the various artistes engaged. The opening part of the programme included the usual chair business, in which, however, four ladies took part. Mr O. Reed and Mr J Gilbert were the corner-men, and were exceedingly funny. Mies Carrie Godfrey sang “Dreaming Eyes,” and Miss Ainsworth, “ Beautiful Girl of Kildare.” These ladies possess very nice voices, and rendered their songs excellently. Mr Reed and Mr Gilbert supplied the fun in this part, and kept the audience in roars of laughter, the former being particularly hapoy in his polyglot burlesque of “ Pinaf ere.” Madle. Zitella, who introduced change songs, is an artiste of very high order. She possesses a pleasing voice and considerable musical ability. These advantages, added to a very handsome figure, tend to ensure Mdlle, Zitella as a prime favorite here. She was honored with a triple encoie and responded with two spirited motto songs. _ Mr Gilbert, as a compeer of the Girards, is exceedingly clover, his grotesque dancing in the sketch ha gave being something to witness. Miss Carrie Godfrey and Miss Ainsworth sang some ballad-, the latter a waltz song, with success. Messrs Cummings and Harrington in their double song and dance were good, and Mr M. Simonsen as usual created quite a furore by his playing of a fantasia on English and Irish airs. Being encored he responded with the “Last Rose of Summer.” Mr Heed is a comedian, who, without effort, makes his audience laugh at ’.and with him in his specialities, which have the merit of being new. One of the great features of the entertainment was Miss Lottie Elliott’s skipping rope dancing, which is far and away the beat ever seen here. She is, in her particular line, a star, and her performance must be seen to be appreciated. Taken altogether, the performance was a decided success, and the Froliques may count upon a successful career amjngst us. The same bill will be repeated to night.
