MAGISTRATES' COURTS.

CHBISTOHUBOH. Thtjbsday, May 27. [Before G.L. Mellish, Esq., 8.M., and G. L. Lee, Esq., J.P.] DEtrNiBNNBSS —For this offence accused, who appeared and was fined yesterday, on a double charge of the same kind, was sentenoed to fourteen days' imprisonment with hard labor. Two first offenders were fined ss. Assault.—Wm. Gilchrist was charged with assaulting one Kate Birmingham in Gloucester street. Mr Neck for accused. Mrs Birmingham and her husband proved the offence, which took place at half-seven last evening, and which acoording to their statement was of an unprovoked and indecent character. The accused, being sworn, said that he had been asked by the husband to shout, and on his refusal that person threatened unless accused gave him 10a to give him in charge for assaulting his wife, which was finally done. Nothing had passed of the nature represented by the previous witnesses. Mr Sub-Inspector O'Donnell spoke to the character of the accused, whom ho had known for several years. The Bench thought the most had been made of the case by Mrs Birmingham, but the assault such as it was was quite unjus'ifiable. Einod 40s. Stbaung miom A Till.—J. W. Fuller, who appeared to be Buffering from the effects of drink, was brought up on this charge, and remanded till June 3rd for medical treatment.
