CANTERBURY COLLEGE.
The Board of Governors of the Canterbury College held a special meeting on Tuesday afternoon. There were present—Mr W. Montgomery (chairman), the Most Rev. the Primate, and Messrs H. R. Webb, W. Beeves, T. H. Potts, J. N. Tosswill, J. H. Lance, E. O. J. Stevens, J. V. Colborne-Veol, O. C. Bowen, E. de c, Malet, Eev. 0. Eraser, and Dr, Coward. The Chairman stated that this was a meeting called to consider matters that required to be disposed of as soon as possible, and also because some members of the Board would be leaving Christchurch for Wellington during the week. He then referred to motions of which notice had been given at a former meeting, in reference to the entrance of candidates for scholarships, &c., and also to committee reports, working recommendations as to dealing with reserves, and other matters connected with the College. Mr Hamilton not being present his motion fell through, the Chairman stating that it could be brought on at the next ordinary meeting, but that due notice should be given. The motion referred to was as follows : “ That the age for entrance of resident students at the Agricultural School be extended from nineteen years to twenty-three years.” The Board then proceeded to the consideration of the report of the College committee. The committee recommended that the Board should accept the tender of Greig and Hunter for building the Girls’ High School, at a cost of £4567 8s 9.1, and to authorise the College seal to be affixed to the contract.
The Rev. O. Eraser moved the adaption of the recommendation made by the College committee, which was carried. The recommendation of the estimates committee as to affixing the seal of the Board to certain deeds was adopted. The reserves committee submitted a report recommending that the Government be moved to bring in a Bill authorising the sale of all reserves other than pastoral reserves. Dr. Coward moved, and Mr E. de o Malet seconded— “ That the recommendation be agreed to.”
The Board went into committee to consider the matter, and, on resuming, the chairman reported progress, without asking leave to sit again. Mr Stevens then moved—“ That the consideration of the reserves committee’s report bo postponed for ten months,”
The motion was carried. The Board went into committee on the report of the committee of the school of agriculture, and, on resuming, submitted the following resolutions, which were agreed to by the Board, namely : —“ That the Board increase the amount voted for dairy stock from £l5O to £300;” “That a master to give instruction in mathematics, surveying and book-keeping be advertised for at a salary of £l5O per annum, with board and residence, the appointment to be for twelve months only.” On the recommendation of the museum committee, the Board appointed Richard Beattie night watchman at the museum. Mr Malet was appointed to have custody of the seal, and to sign cheques during the chairman’s absence from Christchurch. Some discussion of a conversational character took place in reference ,to the examination of candidates for scholarships in connection with the School of Agriculture, Mr Bowen expressing the opinion that the decision of the examiners should bo final, on the standards being once determined. He referred to the subject as ho understood that it had been intimated to one of the examiners that their decision was not to be final, to which he at once took exception. The Chairman explained the position by saying that the examiners were appointed to examine those for entrance and candidates for scholarships, being such as had passed the sth and 6th standards respectively, and the examiners were also requested to make such recommendations as they might think advisable or desirable in favor of students who, though not having passed, might yet be entitled to consideration for general excellence; and it would then be for the Board to decide what to do in the matter.
After gome farther discussion the question dropped.
