MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, Mat 26. [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M., and J, P. Jameson, Esq-, J.P.] Drunkenness. —Mary Brown and Margaret Dempsey for this offence were fined 20a each, and Wm. Thomson, who failed to answer to his bail yesterday on a similar charge, was ■fined 30a in all. _ . , , Indecent Exposure.— John Erickson and Edward Anderson, sailors, were charged with the above in a railway carnage at Hillsborough. Wm. Bowles, a railway guard, proved the offence, and tho accused pleaded pressing necessity and ignorance of the customs of the country. Fined 20s each and cabhire 2s. , Stealing prom a Dwelling. —Alexander Johnston was again brought up for stealing a parcel of clothes, belonging to J. McVicker, from the A 1 Hotel. The case had been remanded, yesterday, for the production of further evidence, and the accused now called Wm. Matson, who deposed to hearing the accused say in his own house, on the morning after the alleged offence, that he had merely taken the parcel for safe keeping. Witness was in company with the accused when the latter was arrested. They were looking for the owner, with the of giving him his parcel. His Worship said the circumstances were very suspicious, but there being a doubt as to the felonious intention, accused 'Would for this time be allowed to go, with a severe caution as to any similar occurrence. Accused was then discharged. Failing to Provide. —W. H. Strange, who had been ordered to pay 17s per week for tho maintenance of his family, was brought up for failing to do so for the period of one month. The police, who had been on the look out for him, found him at the Kaiapoi E.M. Court under arrest for being diunk and disorderly, and had him remanded to Christchurch on tho present charge. Accused said he had been working for the last three weeks at Woodend ; ho had no intention of evading the payment of his contribution, but was waiting for the completion of his job before doing so. The case was ordered to stand over till Monday. If the arrears were paid by that time nothing more would be heard of it, but if default is made the prisoner to be again arrested.
