SUNDAY FRUIT SELLING.
To the Editor of the Globe. Sib, —Is the united intelligence of the whole world equal to that of Christchurch, and do tt s same laws exist here as in Great Britain, India, Canada, the Cape, Tasmania, Victoria, &c.? If so, why am I. persecuted by a small section of a small community for carrying on a business which Is considered legitimate in all other portions of her Majesty’s dominions ? I myself, and my father before me, were the O’cupants of a fruit shop, 201, Oxford street, London, for over sixty years, in the most fashionable quarter of the great metropolis. This shop was open every Sunday during the whole of that period. We were never interrupted in our business, because it was considered a necessity that places where light refreshments only were sold should be allowed to carry on their trade, on purpose to combat much larger and grievous evils. Now, sir, I think what has been found a necessity in these older countries may be equally so here, or are we such a higly moral and religious community that habits and immoralities that exist elsewhere do not exist here ? Sir, lam afraid not. In London alone are at the present time, according to a late calculation, fifty miles of fruit shops open on a Sunday. In every colony which I have mentioned above fruit shops are allowed to keep open on Sundays.
Yours, &c., WICKED MARKS, Christchurch, 26th May, 1880.
