Gentlemen riders allowed 71b. The winner of tho Grand National Handicap to carry 101 b penalty. 3 miles. Mr P. Butler's ch g Tho Agent, by Oliver Cromwell, aged, 12st 61b 1 ... (H. Lunn) 1 Mr B. Mclvor's blk g Loch Lomond, syrs, list 121 b (Owner) 0 Lone Hand, Harkaway, Royalty, Mickey Free, and Banjo were scratched. Betting—3 to lon the Agent.

The Baron, in pursuance of his former tactics, at once went to the front, followed by Grey Momus and The Agent, Loch Lomond was next, and Miss Hungerford. In this order they [jumped the first fence ; Grey Momus took up the running, and held a strong lead to the double, where he fell. Agent now took command, closely waited on by Magic, with Grey Momus, who had been very quickly remounted. Next to these succeeded Baron and Miss Hungerford in the order named. The favorite led over the atone wall, which Grey Momua jumped just in front of Magic, Miss Hungerford being next. Thelastnamed fell at Ford's, where the Agent was still in front, with Magic as his immediate attendant. Grey Momus was next, the others being already completely out of the hunt. At the obstacle.on the next turn Magic came to grief, but was soon up again, and with Grey Momus was now following The Agent at a distance of about 100 yards. Magic again, however, came to grief at the fence at the last'turn, Hankins having a very nasty fall. Agent eventually cantered in a very easy winner; Grey Momus was second, and the others distanced. Consolation Handicap of 50 sovs added to a sweepstake of 2 sovs for acceptors ; nomination 1 sov, to go to the fund. Two miles. Mr W. Clifford's b g Clarence, aged, list 71b (R. Mclvor) 1 Mr F. McCoy) 0 Betting—6 to 4 agst Eoyalty, 3 to 1 Stella and Clarence, 5 to 1 Banjo.

Harkaway made play, closely followed by Clarence, by whom he was speedily supplanted, the rest close together with the exception of Eoyalty, who whipped in. Harkaway refused at Redwood's, at which fence Mickey Free fell, giving Keith a very heavy fall. Clarence now went to the front, followed by Eoyalty, with Stella in close attendance, the pace being very fast. Eoyalty led by ten lengths over the double, but after this had been negociated Clarence, who been temporarily deprived of the lead, went up, and at the second jump from home was only a length and a half behind. With Stella a fewlengths behind, these positions were maintained to the laat fence, when Stella cried a go, while Claronce, coming on full of running, collared Eoyalty at the last jump, and completely out-pacing the favorite in tho run in won eaaily by aeveral lengths. Stella was a moderate third, the reßt not being persevered with. Thia brought to a conclusion probably the most successful meeting ever held by the New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase Club. Isaac and Castro fell at three-quarters of a mile, and with Kildare were out of it. This left only five in the race, and of these Black Bobs and Antoinette were fully twenty lengths in front, with Theodore and Eomance next, Huntsman a long way behind. From this Antoinette began to draw away from Black Bess, but still an exciting'struggle took place between them, as on turning into the straight for the run home there was only half alength between them. The big mare was however able to hold her own, and ultimately won by three-quarters of a length. Eomance passed Theodore in the straight, and finished a bad third.
