SPORTING NOTES.
Bt Sistbad. Owner? are reminded that nominations for the Southland Derby close on the 25th. I remind those interested that a meeting will be held this evening (Saturday), at the Commercial Hotel, with a view of reorganising Tattersall's Club. It is to be hoped the meeting will be well attended, and, with a good working committee and an. energetic secretary, there can be little question as to the eventual success of the Club, which will certainly supply a long-felt want. Encouraged by the suooess of their two recent meetings, the Otautau stewards have formed a Joakey Olub in that district. I Bee a horse called Oroydon won a race at the recent meeting there. If it be the Oroydon who won a Maiden Plato in Ohnstchurch years a;;o he mußt indeed be a veteran of the * nr£ - J „ ■. it The approaching Birthday Races at the Forbury, sayß "Mazeppa," are not attracting much attention in town. There is absolutely no betting on any of the events, the makers of treble boofca finding no oustomers on thie occasion. Intermittent work is done on the course by some of the mediocrities engaged, but to chroniole their doings would not be interesting. Perhaps we shall have a clue to the winners when the acceptances come out next Saturday ; meanwhile the prevailing impression is that Mr Goodman will win the flat handicaps with whiohever he eleots to send. The Wellington Racing Olub (says tne "Times") has notified its intention of oausing to be introduced during the next session of Parliament a Bill for the purpose of having itself constituted a corporate body, and to have transferred to it, as such a body, all rights, privileges, and liabilities of the Hutt Park aad Racecourse Board. Stewart Waddbll, says "Beacon," finds it impossible to get his horse Eangatira to stand training again, and this sterling good Australian horso will probably be sent to stud duties in the inland districts, where his undeniably high breeding and excellent performances ehould secure for him plenty of patronage. Cannon Ball, a horse who appeared, though it must bo confessed not to muoh advantage, as a cross country horse last season, fractured his shoulder during the week while being schooled by Fred. Mathews. The horse was subsequently destroyed.
