EDUCATION BOARD.
The usual meeting of the above Board was held at the Board room, Christohurch, on Thursday, at three o'clock. Present — Messrs Inglis (chairman), Bowen, Fraser, Cunningham, Webb, and H. J. Tancred. Reports were received from the Killinoby and Heathcote side schools. Sundry appointments were confirmed, and applications dealt with. Mies Ockford's application for appointment as mistress of the infant school, Lyttelton, was granted at a salary of £IOO per annum, Miss Jenkins to take the place vacated by Miss Ockford at Ohrißtchurob. Increases of £lO each per annum were voted to the salaries of several teachers in Sydenham school, Miss Taylor of the same school to receive an increase of £2O per annum. An increase of salary was voted in lieu of lodging allowance to Mies Dufnell, of Flaxton school. Miss Bowley's removal from Colombo road to East Christchureh school was not sanctioned for the present. Mr A. Smith, reoommended by the committee of Kaiapoi Island school for employment there, not holding any certificate of qualification, was not appointed ; Mr Matthews, a former applicant, to fill the situation temporarily; confirmation of this appointment to be subject to his passing the usual examination. A deputation from the East Christohurch school committee waited on the Board with reference to the appointment of a head mistress for the girls' school, the appointment of Miss Bly as infant schoolmistress, and other matters. After hearing the deputation, the Board decided that any increase in the number of the staff could not be sanctioned, but if by re-organi-sation and re-distribution of salaries, room could be made, there would be no objection to the appointment of a head mistress, and the Board would be willing to supplement the funds at the disposal of the committee to some extent. As to the appointment of Miss Blyth to be mistress of the infant school, the Board sustained its former decision, which was that she could not be so appointed until she possessed the necessary qualifications. A tender was accepted for the North Kowai school building and fencing the grounds. The architect's plans for and report on alterations at Sydenham school and erection of a caretaker's house at the same place were considered and postponed for further examination. A proposal to heat the whole of the Normal school buildings by hot water pipes was allowed to stand over. The grates, chimneys, <fco., ware ordered to be improved at the Kaiapoi school. Further repairs to the same building were deferred until next summer. After the transaction of other business of a routine character, the Board went into committee and afterwards adjourned.
