CHRISTCHURCH DEBATING SOCIETY.
The usual fortnightly meeting of this society was held last evening in Mr Gee's schoolroom, Worcester street, Mr Edward Dobson in the chair. The subject for discussion, viz., " The Drama, and its effects on the morality of the age," was opened by Mr Batcholov, who concluded his remarks by moving—- " That the drama has a beneficial effect on the morality of the age," which was seconded by Mr J. Whyte. Mr Griffiths moved, as an amendment, the insertion of the word "not" after the word "has," which was seconded by Mr Parker. Considerable discussion ensued, the chairman remarking that he thought the question should bo —" How can the drama be made to conduce to the morality of the age." He hoped some ono would speak to the question of how we shall purify the theatre. On the amendment boim; put, it was loßt by seven to four, and Mr Jjatchelor's motion was carried. Five newmembers joined the society. The next dobato I will be —" Is it necessary to take legal steps 1 for the prevention of Chinese immigration ?"
