Labceny.—Annie Smith was charged with the larceny of a wrapper and a pair of mittens, value 4s, the property of Charles Bowles, tram • car conduotor. Inspeotor O'Donnell asked for a remand till Tuesday next for the production df evidence. The Bench aaked accused if she oould procure bail. Accused replied her husband would be in Ohristohurch to-night. She too had evidence to bring if remanded. Bemanded till Tuesdaynext. Bail allowed inonesurety of £lO. Thomaß Corbet Browne alias William Henry Thompson was charged with larceny from the shop of Frederick Biggp, chemist, High straet, of a nail brush and tooth brush valuo 4s. Mr Gresson appeared for the accused. Frederick Biggs deposed that accused came to his shop on May 20th, and asked to see some nail brushes. He selected one from four placed before him. He then asked to see Borne tooth brushes. He selected one He then asked for some court plaister but bought none; also for some goldbeaters Bkin tni soap which he bought. The artioles selected from were lying before him in boxes on the counter, A lady came in to make some purchase*. His back was turned to prisoner whilst serving her. When about to pay for them he said he had lost half a sovereign. He declined to turn out his pockets as suggested, and left the shop. Shortly after Mr Cooke the chemist came in, and from what, was told him he counted the nail brushes and missed one. Could not be sure prisoner took a nail brush as he could not count them. The nail brushes and certain of his tooth brushes were stampod with his name in ink. He recognised the tooth brush produced as hia property, its value being Is 6i. By Mr Gresson, I knew accused by sight, wasn't sure he had ever sold him anything before. He did not ask for oredit ? About g feet distance was between the lady customer and accused. He turned his back to prisoner twice for a minute whilst taking something out of a jar. He did not wish to press the charge. Detective Benjamin deposed that yesterday he took acou?ed to his bedroom at Norfolk's boarding house, Montreal street south, telling him he was suspected of stealing ; a tooth brush, and would searoh the room, he did so, and found the tooth bruih in the pocket of an overcoat hanging in the bedroom. Acoussed said he had got it from Mr Biggs • the day before on oredit. Prosecutor identi- J fied it as his. Accused said he had no nail : brushes in his possession. Mr Gresson, in i addressing the Bench, said the aooused was i formerly in his offioe, and for a year had_ been, ] and was now, in the employ of the Shipping i Company. He was very respectable, and i would ask the Bench to dismiss the charge. < Dismissed. ' Fah,in(J to Pbovtdh.—John Byan was i charged with failing to provide for the support of his wife and eleven children. Accused, who had pulled his boots off before entering the Court, seemed in a demented state. The Benoh, having no jurisdiction in this case, re- , manded the accused till Tuesday for the pre- : sense of the Resident Magistrate.
