The master of the Gareloch reports that on Saturday night, when the ship was about twenty miles to the southward of Capo Campbell, and within sight of the shore, ft peculiar phenomenon was noticed from the vessel. At intervals of a fow seconds for quite a considerabla time immense flames, or what were taken to bo such, were seen as though shooting out of a portion of the high land. The brigantine Ada C. Owen. Capt. McLeod, arrived on Sunday from Manukau, whence she left on the 10th current. Moderate winds were met with until the vessel was within forty miles of the Peninsula, when a S.W. gale was encountered, driving her off the land. The Ada C. Owen was berthed at the Tunnel wharf. The ship Gareloch, Captain Donaldson, arrived yesterday from Sydney with coals and cornsacks. She left there on May 6th, and had northerly winds to tho Strait last Thursday. _ A hard S.E. gale was there met with, the wind blowing with great fury. A squall struck the ship, taking the two foretopsails, the maintopgallant sail, and two mizen topsails, and carrying away the mia.cn topsail yard ; passed through the Straits on Saturday, since which variable winds were experienced. On discharge, the Gareloch loads for the United Kingdom, whither she i 3 advertised to sail for by the New Zealaad Shipping Company. The Lizzie Guy for Oamaru, Annie Hill for Bluff, and the Advance for Kaiapoi, respectively from Hokitika, Greymouth, and Thames, were still in port yesterday wiedbound, with a poor prospect—in face of the promised S.W. gale—of getting to their destinations. The Edwin Fox, at the Gladstone Pier, was shifted ahead yesterday, and the Trevelyan towed in and berthed, ready to commence to-day to discharge.
