THEATRE ROYAL.

The farewell benefit of Mr O. F. Searle last night had the effect of bringing together such a house at tho theatre asreminded one of old times. The dress circle was well filled, as also were tho other parts of the house. The opening piece was «All that Glitters,” which was very nicely put on the stage. Miss Lizzie Morgan played Martha Gibbs with care and effect, deserving every praise for a ,very excellent rendition of the character. Miss Lizzie Lawrence was also good as Lady Valeria, though a little more life would have been an improvement. Mr Searle played Jasper Plum in a manner deserving of praise, giving throughout a very artistic conception of the part. Mr Boothman, though somewhat over boisterous at times, made a good Stephen, and Mr Rede was successful as Sir Arthur. Mr Hydes fairly revelled in the part of Toby Twinkle, and kept the house in roars of laughter throughout the piece. He was exceedingly humorous, and it was one of the happiest efforts of this gentleman throughout the season. “The Critic” followed, and in this Miss Colville played Tilburina most successfully. She entered thoroughly into the spirit and fun of the piece, and tho result was a very excellent performance. The Confidante was played by Miss Ashton. Of Mr Hoskins as Puff it is needless to soy much. It was characterised by the ability which always distinguishes his acting, and was a great treat. Mr Hydes as Whiskerandos was exceedingly good, his mimicry of a well-known actor of melodramatic [proclivities [exciting roars of laughter. Mr Searle doubled the parts of Sir Fretful and the Governor, and was good in both. The other parts were well filled, and the piece went excellently. The performers wore called at the end of each piece, and Mr Williams received the same complement for his scenery. The bill will be repeated this evening.
