A heavy north-east gale, with occasional thunderstorms, has prevailed since Monday night, preventing the steamers calling or being communicated with. The Eaagatira and Hawea, from MSnukau, passed on. The rain has been so heavy that the road between Normanby and Stratford has been rendered impassable, even for a horse, and the Southern mails have been detained at Hawera. BLENHEIM, May 12. Sad and Fatal Accident. Particulars are just to hand of a shocking death by burning at Queen Charlotte’s Sound. They show that on Sunday last Mr Isaac Landell, of Tellerton run, Tory Channel, left homo accompanied by his two daughters. They proceeded in a boat to Oyster Bay, where they landed and wore joined by a young man named Flood. The party then comment.'d setting fire to the scrub, the two girls being a short distance from Landell and Flood. After firing for a short time, Landell called to the girls to come where ho was. A strong wind was blowing at the time, and the scrub was burning fiercely. In response to the summons, the eldest daughter only came, while the other was caught in the flames before she could effect her escape, and was burned to death. 'The father and Flood, seeing the danger the girl was in, rushed to her assistance, but, when they reached her, she was quite dead, the flesh being blackened and hard. Great sympathy is felt for Mr Landell in his painful bereavement. WELLINGTON, May 12. He loft Dunedin some days ago on “ urgent business,” hut has not been heard of since the San Francisco mail left Auckland. This unlocked for exit has caused no little surprise and discussion in commercial circles, and many rumors aro afloat. It is understood that Webb’s difficulties had their origin in speculation. A careful audit is now being made of the books of the Building Society of which he 1 was manager. AUCKLAND, May U. A Sad Death. The unfortunate young woman, Mrs Ward, [ i who jumped down a well in Chapel street | I while suffering from low fever, died last . i night. Mrs Ward was only twenty-two J . years of age.

The donations amounted to £133 more than last year. The children make and mend their own shoes. WELLINGTON, May 11. Proceedings at tlie Appeal CourtAt the Appeal Court to day his Honor the Chief Justice and Justices Williams and Johnston referred in feeling terms to the lamented death of Mr Macaatey, of Dunedin, and the loss which the Bench, Bar, and public had sustained through his death. Mr Stout, on behalf of the Bar, spoke in similar terms, and felt sura that Mr Macassey's family in their bereavement would have the sympathy of the whole profession. In re Q. B. Barton, an application on rule reserved from th« Registrar at Dunedin to strike Mr Barton, a barrister and solicitor, off the rolls of the Supreme Court, no counsel appeared on either side. The various affidavits made in the case went to show that the subject of the application had been guilty of the misappropriation of the funds of his clients in England, while acting for them under power of attorney. The rule was made absolute. In the case of Cleave v King and others, judgment was reserved. DUNEDIN, May 11. Verdict. At the inquest on W. J. [from oue own cobeesposdeht.t WELLINGTON, May 11. 1 Sir W- Fox. An absurd rumour was published by the “ New Zealand Times ” this morning to the effect that Sir William Fox was to be called i to the Ministry. As the “ Times ” expressed it, it appeared that this did not mean, as it 1 might have been thought to do, that Sir W. i Fox was about to take holy orders, hut that he was likely to join the Cabinet. I need hardly say that there is not one syllable of truth or probability in this report. There never has been the slightest idea of Sir W. Fox joining the Ministry at all. The Government would not i make the offer under the existing circumstances. It would damage them with Parlia- • ment, and Sir W. Fox certainly would not i accept if offered. I need not enlarge on the numerous complications that would be involved by his taking a portfolio at the present • time. I may simply state on authority that there is not the faintest ground for the report 1 referred to. ; Ministerial Measures. L The Ministerial measures are still in active preparation, and the Attorney-General is at ■ work almost night and day. Among the measures now being got ready may be menti ned the Gaming and Lotteries Bill, which I understand is to be introduced in the Legislative Council early in the session by Mr Whitaker in very similar shape to the BUI shelved last year, as to the provisions regard- , ing lotteries, raffles, ait unions, sweeps, consultations, Ac. I believa that the new Bill is more comprehensive in scope, so as to leave : fewer loop holes for the evasion of the penal clauses. Ministers’ Movements. 1 Mr Bryce is on the Hinetnoa, which brings Major Atkinson and Judge Richmond from Taranaki. She was unable to leave Nelson until nine this morning, owing to a heavy N.W, gale and high sea. She goes first to Picton, taking the Railway Commissioners from Nelson, and then comes to Wellington, arriving late this evening.
