Colonial Industries CommissionMessrs Burns and Tinne, members of the Colonial Industries Commission, examined a number of witnesses at the Post-office buildings to-day. Sir G. Grey’s MeetingGreat preparations are being made for Sir George Grey’s meeting. His committee have sent invitations to representatives of the Oddfellows’ Society, tho Orange Society, Foresters, Good Templars, Working-men’s Club, Bricklayers’ Association, Carpenters’ Society, Shipwrights, Hibernian Society, the Mayors of Auckland, Thames, Parnell, and Ooehunga, together with the members of the House of Representatives, Legislative Council, and the leading city and country residents. The Kawakawa Railway. The first sod has been turned of the extension of the Kawakawa railway. Numerous speeches were made showing the interest evinced by the public of the district in seeing the lino carried to deep water. The Late Violent AssaultThe alleged assault on Mr Luke, forema of goods shed, railway department, has not been cleared up. The man’s face would appear to have borne tbo brunt of the injuries, for it is one livid mass of contused and swollen flesh. Found Drowned. The inquest on the body of a marine found floating in the harbour yesterday, resulted in a verdict ot found drowned. He was identified as Abel Hetherington, servant to Captain Bruce, of H.M.S. Cormorant. It is believed that ha fell over the wharf going down to meet his boat. Murder by PolynesiansBy tho Meg Merrilies, from Levuka, intelligence has been brought of tho murder of an American named Johnston, of tho firm of Johnston and Chaffin, by tho natives of tbe island of Toba. TIMARU, May 10. Heavy Gale. A very heavy northerly gale prevailed all yesterday and during last night. EireSome stacks of oats at the Hook, belonging to Mr J. Nowlands, have been burnt down, and also a combine and elevators belonging to Messrs McGovern and Handy. Tho former were uninsured, and the latter were covered by a £2OO risk in tbe Standard. OAMARU, May 10. Steeplechasing. At a meeting of the Oamaru Jockey Club to-r.ight it was decided to hold a steeplechase meeting on June 12th. Tho programme consists of a maiden of 50 sovs, a handicap of 100 sovs, a selling steeplechase of 25 sovs, and a consolation of 30 sovs. Entries for the handicap aro to be in on or beforo the 22nd inst., and the general entries and acceptances on the 11th June. DUNEDIN, May 10. Railway EmployeesThe goods porters working in the railway sheds received instructions this morning that they would hereafter be required to work without any increase of pay tune hours a-day, or longer if required. A deputation this forenoon waited on Mr W. D. Stewart, M.H.R., who promised to enquire into the matter. Assaulting the PoliceAt the City Police Court W. Conway, tho well known cricketer, was charged with assaulting the police, and Fitzclarenco Roberts, a squatter, with attempting to rescue biro. The case against the former was dismissed, and Roberts was fined £5. BLUFF, May 10. The Missing SealersThe Stella has arrived from the Auckland Islands. Captain McKoisey reports no traces of the missing sealers. Ho repaired tho depot and searched all the islands.
