THEATRE ROYAL.

The “ School for Scandal,” with which the playgoers of Christchurch are pretty familiar, was revived last night for the first of a series of farewell performances, in which Mr O. F. Searle will take part. Miss Florence Colville was the Lady Teazle. Miss Lizzie Laurence played Maria very nicely indeed, giving a “pleasant and enjoyable rendering of the character. Miss Ashton and Miss Herrick were oast for Mrs Candour and Lady Sneerwell respectively. Mr Searle's Sir Peter was, as a whole, a meritorious performance, and, considering the difficulties under which he labored, that gentleman may fairly be congratulated upon it. When the circumstances under which Mr Searle has returned to the stage are remembered, very great allowances must be made for any trifling deficiencies which might be noticeable on the occasion. In the scene with Charles, where ho informs him of the presence of the French milliner, Mr Searle played with great humor and success, Mr Hoskins as Charles Surface was a perfect treat. From first to last his performance was finished and artistic to a degree, and in the screen scene he received the well-merited honor of a recall. Mr Boothuian made a very good Joseph Surface, playing the part naturally and easily. Mr Hydes gave us the traditional rendering of the stage Hebrew, which is os far removed from actual life as it is possible to be. The other parts wore fairlyfilled. The same piece will be repeated to-night, and to-morrow “ The Road to Ruin,” with Mr Hoskins as Goldfinch, will bo given.
