CORRESPONDENCE.

To the Editor of the Globe. Sib, —Here are a few plain reasons why the Lyttelton Colonists’ Hall and Library should be taken over by the borough : 1. Because the money that purchased the hall came from the taxpayers. 2. Because the land it stands upon now belongs to the borough, which, however, gets no rent from it. 3. Because the borough requires the hall for municipal offices and a place in which the ratepayers may meet. -1. Because the borough does not require tho hall for entertainments, concerts, or theatrical shows, one better adapted for these purposes having been built in the town by a society. 5. Because the original donors of the library gave it to the whole of the people, not to a select few. 6. Because tho additions which from time to time have been made to tho library have been purchased with public money. 7. Because that out of 3000 or 4000 people, for whom the library was established, but ninety are receiving any benefit from it. 8. Because both the library and the hall are free from debt. 9. Because they can be obtained for the taking. 10. Because they rightly belong to the people. Ratepayers look well at the offer which is made to you—an offer which, if made by any private person, would be a munificent gift. If you vote “ against ” the proposal tomorrow it must ho taken that you make no claim to what is justly yours, therefore let me urge you to strike from your ballot papers the word against,” and leave the other “ for,” which means neither more nor less than “ for ” having your rights. Yours, &e.,
