MR READER WOOD’S ADDRESS.
(By Teleqeaph.] AUCKLAND, May 7.
Mr Header Wood addressed the electors of Wuitamata to-night at Davenport Hall, North Shore. Mr Oliver Mays took the chair. Mr Wood received an attentive hewing. Ho entered at length into the history of the alleged ratting business, and gave a detailed account of the negotiations and their outcome. Ho said that but for the removal of the deadlock and the voting of the supply, the stoppage of which had been threatened, many a man in budnepa in Auckland would be bankrupt, and what would havo occurred in Auckland would have happened throughout the colony, and all the departments of the Government thrown into confusion. Mr Wood concluded a lengthy speech by referring to the additional taxation which had been imposed and the present judicial state of the colony. Mr Robert Lusk proposed a vote of thanks only, which was rejected. Mr Joseph Bennett moved, and Captain Casey seconded, a vote of confidence in Mr Wood, which was carried.
