ANCIENT ORDER OF FORESTERS.
A special meeting of the Canterbury United District Ancient Order of Foresters was held in the Foresters’ Hall, Oxford terrace, at seven o’clock on Thursday evening. Officers present—D.O.R. Bro. M. Weastall, D.S.C R, Bro. J. Gapes, son., P.C.R., D.T. Bro. Crooks, X) S. Thos. Gapes, Beadle Bro. Mummery. The delegates wore in attendance representing the following Courts :—2309, P.C.R.’s Williams and Watts ; 2703, P.D.O.R.’s Wcybourne and Willcox; 6031, Bro. N. F. Morley ; 6033, Bro. M. Hunigan ; 6091, Bro. W. Jacques. The D.O.R. having opened the court in duo form, called on the secretary to state the objects for which the meeting had been summoned.
The Secretary commenced by stating that he regretted having to convene the meeting to again consider the advisability or otherwise of altering the now district laws, as the usual half-yearly meeting will take place in July next. Under the circumstances he thought it inadvisable to postpone the subject, as its importance demanded that it should be settled at once, and no doubt they would be of the same opinion after he had read to them the correspondence from tho registrar bearing on the same. The secretary horn read the latter from the registrar, together with the report of the revising barrister, which intimated that the branches could not be registered ns branches of the district, unless the district laws were altered so as to embrace besides the funeral fund, all funds stated in the rules of the branches, including medical and sick funds. The secretary said it was a great pity that tho revising barrister had not found this out before registering tho new district laws, which they had only lately received from Wellington duly registered. Those wore about to bo printed, and had only been delayed in consequence of that meeting
to decide whether they should bo altered or not.
The meeting here went into committee, and on resuming it was resolved—“ That all Courts wishing to register be requested to register as separate societies, and not as branches of the Canterbury United District, under clause 30, section 2, of the Friendly Societies Act.” The Secretary reported the death of the late Bro. F. Baker, and stated that the funeral donation of £2O had been paid to the widow.
Resolved—“ That £l5O be invested in the Permanent Investment and Loan Association, and that the property of the district be insured.” The D. 0.8. closed the Court with the usual formalities.
