CHRISTCHURCH DEBATING SOCIETY.

The second meeting for tho session of the above was held last night at Geo’s schoolroom. There was a fair attendance of members, tho president, Mr E. C. J. Btovous, being in the chair. Mr Spackman introduced the subject for debate, viz., “ Is manhood suffrage applicable to New Zealand ?’ He argued that manhood suffrage was not applicable, and supported his argument by references to England. Mr Whyte supported the opener. Messrs Stevens, Dobson, Townsend, Beeves, Stanley Edwards, and J. 0. Edwards spoke in favor of manhood suffrage being applicable to Now Zealand. The motion was then put in the following form, viz,, “That manhood suffrage is cot applicable to New Zealand.” An amendment to strike out the word “ not ” was proposed. On the votes being taken the amendment was declared to bo carried, and tho original motion, as amended, was then put, and carried by a largo majority.
