THE MUNICIPAL LOAN.

The polling of the citizens, with respect to the proposals of the City Council for borrowing certain sums of money, commenced this morning, at the City Council Chambers, Mr Q-. L. Lee aoting|ai Eetnroing Officer. Owing, probably, to the insufficient accommodation, the voting was exceedingly slow, and it is doubtful whether, at the time of the close of the poll, anything like the number of ratepayers desiring to vote will he able to record their opinions. Considerable surprise wta manifested that his Worship the Mayor had not notified the public that the poll would take place to day. Several prominent citizens took the trouble to have notices printed and sent the bellman round. The voting papers were most intricate and there is every probability of a large number votes being rendered informal by the persons voting not understanding how to record their votes so as to express their opinions. Efforts were made to obtain a copy of the voting paper so as to paste it up outside, enabling ‘voters to glean some information of what they had to do before going into the polling booth, but for some inexplicable reason this was objected to. When we find, as was the case yesterday, members of the House of Bepresentatives, past and present Oty Councillors, merchants, and others nullifying their intention owing to the complexity of the voting paper, it is hardly to be expected that the general body of ratepayers will be any better informed. The result of the poll will probably be declared to-morrow.
