CRICKET AND ATHLETIC SPORTS ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the promoters of the above was held on Tuesday evening at the Commercial Hotel, Mr E. C. J. Stevens in the chair. There was a large attendance. The memorandum and articles of association were discussed at some length, Messrs. L. E. Nathan, A. O. Wilson, E. S. Harley, T. B. Eisher, Jones, M. Hams, and others speaking to the question. The object of the association, aa explained, was the providing of a ground where cricket clubs could practice, and where cricket and football matches, &c, could be played, a charge for admission being made at the gates. A splendid piece of ground for the purpose has been secured, comprising ten aores, situate adjoining tho Eerry road and near the East belt, being about the same distance from Cathedral square as the present crioket ground. It is intended to fence in and thoroughly underground drain and lay out the ground for the purposes of the association, and to set apart a portion for lawn tennis, bowling, and arcaery. A running path will bo mado outside the cricket circle, and a commodious grand stand elected. There is every probability of the tramway running a branch line of some seven chains to the entrance of the grounds from the Eerry road. The Caledonian grounds in Dunedin have proved a great boon to the community, and also have returned a satisfactory percentage to tho shareholders. Here there is great need for Buch a ground a 3 tho one proposed, because on occasions of matches such aa the A'l England Eleven, the cricketers will be enabled to make a small charge to recoup any outlay made, without having recourse to the expedient of charging the public for admission to grounds devoted to public recreation. The provisional directors appointed were —Meaßrs E. C. J. Stevens, A. Duncan, A. O. Wilson, A. Ollivier, and K. Sutherland. The capital of the association is £4500, comprised in 450 shares of £lO each.
