LUMINOUS WALL PAPER.

Descriptions have from time to time appeared in the English papers of a luminous wall paper, a discovery of very considerable interest, to which the “ Building News, ” of 6th February thus refers :—“ The leading idea was the possibility of finding a compound which might bo acted upon by light in such a manner that it would become luminous and reproduce the effects of light when placed in a dark chamber. The luminous paint is to a certain extent based on what is known as Canton’s Phosphorus, a sulphide of calcium, which has the property of phosphorising in the dark ; but the modern compound is made principally from chalk, and if we may judge from the specimens we have seen, is a long way in advance of any of the phosphorising powders in the laboratory of the chemist.” The discovery of this novel process cost the inventor forty years of investigation, when his health broke down, and the matter has since been energetically taken up by Messrs. Ihleo and Horne, 31 Aldormanbury, London. It has attracted so much attention lately that the Lords of the Admiralty have ordered two compartments of H.M.B. Oomus to be painted to test its effects. Arrangements are being made (says the 11 Age ”) with a view of introducing the novel process into Melbourne.
