MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION.
The first meeting of the Melbourne Exhibition Commission was held yesterday at the Chamber of Commerce, at 2.30 p.m. Present —Mr G. G. Stead, president of the Chamber of Commerce (in the chair), Messrs P. Cunningham, L. E. Nathan, J. Beaumont, W. D. Wood, and the Hon. See., Mr J. A. Bird. The chairman said that he had received a reply from Wellington to the effect that the Government accepted the draft committee as wired last week. The hon. sec. was instructed to enquire from the Government how it was proposed to place the committee in funds. He was also authorised to advertise in each of the local papers every alternate day, setting forth the objects of the commission. Local sub-committees were appointed to look after exhibits in their respective departments, viz. : Mr L. E. Nathan—Boots and shoes, soap, candles, coffee, chicory, and spices. Mr J. Beaumont - Brewers, hams and bacon, coal and minerals, mineral waters, confectionery and biscuits. Mr G. G. Stead—Grain (including flour, oatmeal, pearl barley, agricultural seeds, &c., &c., saddlery and harness. Hon. J. T. Peacock—Wool, woollen goods, rope and flax, Mr Robert Allan—Leather and carriage work. Mr P. Cunningham— Jewellery, photography, dairy produce. Mr W. D. Wood Agricultural implements, 1 lottery, bricks, chalk, Ac., and preserved meats. ■Ur O. W. Turner—Specimen of printing and bookbinding, cabinet work. The committee as a whole to look after pictures, works of art, ferns, Ac. It was decided that the committee should meet each Monday at 3.30 p.m. three to fora* a quorum.
