STRANAGHAN, Grocer, 5315 Victoria Street, TO MY FRIENDS AND THE PUBLIC, HAVING taken an active part in the establishment of the “Echo,” and having promised so much in the Prospectus which was issued prior to publication, I consider myself under an obligation to briefly explain why I have severed my connection with the little newspaper. My partners agreed with the conditions expressed in the Prospectus, and in carrying out the ideas enunciated we were at least moderately successful, as the public could not fail to observe. We agreed also that it was desirable to enlarge, in order to give additional space to advertisers, but— We were not agreed as to the means by which the additional capital was to be furnished. Independent of the policy of purchasing the plant, Ac., of the “ Fun,” the price of which was in my opinion far too high, I objected to incurring any responsibility which would directly or indirectly pl«ce my paper under the thumb of any Bank nr other capitalist, and, as the present proprietors of the “Echo ’ differed with me, it was mutually agreed that the partnership should bo dissolved by my surrendering all connection with the paper. Trusting that the time is not far distant when I shall be enabled to float a really free and independent newspaper, and that my third attempt in Christchurch may be more successful.
