George Hart, for forging and uttering a cheque for £4 5s on the Bank of New Zealand, was committed for trial. Samoan Sews. Intelligence from Samoa by the Nautilus states that on April 13 th Mahetoa was anointed King of Samoa. On the following day Colonel Steinberger and party hoisted a flag, and threatened to rebel, and unless the representatives of foreign powers interfere affairs may result seriously. The Present and ex Native Ministers. Mr Sheehan proposes to accompany Mr Bryce overland through the Upper Thames to Grahamstown, and address hisjconstituents there. Deputations. Several deputations waited on the Native Minister to-day. One asked the Government to grant a sum of money as compensation to the Natives in consideration of their granting the land for a road from Cambridge to Rotorua. Mr Brodie and others from the Thames asked the Government to assist in opening the road through the Komatu block. A deputation, consisting of Messrs McDonald, Sheehan, and Morris, asked that lands in the Tauranga district bo thrown open for purchase. Mr Bryce promised to consider the application. GISBORNE, April 26. Proposed Native law-snit Bill. Mr McDonald, M.H.8., has given notice of his intention to introduce a Native Law-suit Bill for the district of the East Coast. Mr Rees and Mr PriceMr Bees has issued a writ against Mr Price, 8.M., for £IOOO damages for the indignity offered through the alleged illegal commitment to custody of the plaintiff. A full report of the conduct of the Resident Magistrate has been forwarded to the Minister for Justice, at Wellington. Mr Oliver.

The Hon. 8.. Oliver, Minister for Public Works, landed here yesterday, and, in company with members of the local bodies, drove inland to inspect the roads of the district and the lands generally. The order of the Court when finally settled will be for the conveyance by the National Bank to the assignees of G. D. Hamerton of all its estate and interest in the lands, tenements, <fcc., conveyed by deed of mortgage dated the Bth September, 1879. Mr Samuel gave notice of appeal. VolcanicThe steam that was being emitted from a fissure on the Sugar Loaves has entirely subsided, and there is now no presence of heat. WELLINGTON, April 26. The Accident to the ManawatuThe enquiry into the circumstances connected with the recent accident to the machinery of the steamer Manawatu will be merely a short preliminary one, for it is practically certain that a full official investigation will be held before a Magistrate and nautical assessors. The San Francisco Mail. The following information relative to the movements of the San Francisco mail steamers has been received by the Secretary of the General Post Office :—“ The Australia left San Francisco on Monday, April 12th. Under the recent arrangements for shortening the period of transit between London and Auckland, the mail steamer sb# jld have left San Francisco on Saturday, April 10th, but, for some reason unexplained in the telegraphic advice, she did not get away on her proper date. It is anticipated that she will make up two days on the voyage down, and reach Auckland on May Ist or 2nd. The s.s. City of Now York, with the March homeward mails, arrived at Sau Francisco on Wednesday, April 21at, one day in advance of contract date. Nominations of Immigrants. Twenty-two nominations of immigrants have been sent home by the outgoing mail. Found Drowned. At the inquest to-day on the body of Jane Angus, found dead in the Bay, the jury returned a verdict of “ Found Drowned.” DUNEDIN, April 26. Reductions. A number of reductions are being made in the Kailway Department here, to lessen the number of clerks and reduce the expenditure.

Re Railway TendersIn the case of the following railway works, for which tenders have been received, the Public Works Department has received instructions from the Government to decline any tenders in the meantime :—Glen Oamaru section, Balclntha to Gatlin’s River line; Castle Rock section, Lumsden-Marora line ; Kakahu contract, Canterbury Interior line. The Selwyn contract of the Canterbury Interior line has been withdrawn from tender. This course has been adopted, pending the report of the Railway Commission. The Cumberland Street Tragedy. It has been stated, on what appears to he good authority, that the police have fresh evidence that Butler was seen near the premises of the murdered people on the morning of the murder. INVERCARGILL, April 26. FireOn Saturday night seven stacks of wheat o» the farm of Mr W. Johnston, Wrey’s Bush, were destroyed by fire, also 1000 bushels of threshed oats and a stack of straw, valued at £3O, belonging to Mr Laidlaw, manager for Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co.
