The barque Examiner, Captain Soonllar, arrived yesterday from Newcastle, having left there on April 3rd. Until the 9th nothing but strong variable winds, accompanied by rain and thunder and lightning, were experienced. Had a two days’ S.E. gale, and made Farewell on the 15th, since which light southerly and easterly weather has prevailed. The s.s. Southern Cross arrived yesterday afternoon from Auckland via way ports. She sails to-day for Wellington and the East Coast, and is advertised to proceed from Auckland to the Fiji Islands, in which trade she was in for two years formerly. It is proposed that she will run between Auckland and lovuka and Tonga, making trips alternately from Auckland to the islands named. On the passage down the coast of the s.s. Southern Cross, that arrived here yesterday, the schooner Nerval was found ashore oa the rocks at the entrance to the Gisborne river. She had gone ashore last Saturday at 8 a.m. while the captain was taking her in without a pilot at low water. The captain’s version of the mishap was that his almanac made the time of high water 9 a.m , and seeing no sign of a pilot coming out of the river, he was anxious to get in and save the tide. The correct high-water time would have been at noon. It is reported that the Norval got off with the loss of her false keel and aome copper. The brig Emperor, Captain Cleary, arrived yesterday from Newcastle with a cargo of coal for Mr C. W. Turner. She left there on the Slat ult., and met with light westerly winds and calms for ten days, making Cape Farewell on April 10 th. Variable light winds were experienced since. The W. C. Wentworth was reported at Newcastle as expected there to load for Lyttelton, and it was rumored she had put in leaky into Broken Bay.
