MELBOURNE EXHIBITION COMMISSION.
A meeting of the members of the Sydney Exhibition Commission was held at half-past two o’clock yesterday afternoon, at the Chamber of Commerce. Present—Messrs. O. W. Turner (in the chair), P. Cunningham, L, E. Nathan, G. G. Stead, J. Beaumont, W. D, Wood, and the Hon. Sec., Mr J. A. Bird. The chairman said that, as regarded his being asked to act as chairman of the Melbourne Exhibition Commission, he was sure it was because it was imagined that he was chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, and as Mr Stead was the present chairman of the Chamber, he was chairman of the Melbourne Commission ex officio. He proposed, therefore, to telegraph to the Government, informing it that Mr Stead was the present chairman of the Chamber, and asking that aa such he be appointed chairman of the Commission, and that he be in future communicated with in all matters pertaining to the Melbourne Commission. After some discussion, it was resolved to telegraph the Government as follows:—“That the Sydney Exhibition Commission be reconstituted, to consist of Hon. J. T. Peacock, Messrs. L. E. Nathan, 0. W. Turner, P. Cunningham, W. D. Wood, Robert Allan, J. Beaumont, and G. G. Stead, with power to add to their number. Mr Stead to be chairman,” and that the Government be requested to communicate direct by wire with that gentleman, such reconstituted body to form the Melbourne Exhibition Commission. A telegram to that effect was at once drawn up, signed, and placed in the hands of Mr J. A. Bird for transmission to Wellington. The meeting then adjourned.
