LATE CABLE NEWS.
[By Telegraph.] Tho following cable messages, appearing in Melbourne papers, were not given in our yesterday’s issue;— LONBON, April 10. Tho death is announced of Lord Hampton, formerly known as Sir John Pakington, who was Secretary of State for the Colonies in Lord Barby’s administration in 1842, and First Lord of the Admiralty in Lord Berby’s second Ministry in 1853. Tho deceased was eighty-one years of age. April 12. Previous to their anticinated retirement from office, the Beaconsfiold Government have elevated to the peerage several prominent members of tho Conservative party. Included among the number are Sir Arthur Guinness, Mr Bailee Cochrane, who has been for ne-rly forty years a member of the House of Commons, Sir Lawrence Park, Bart., and Sir Ivor Bertie Guest, Bart. Lord Lytton, Viceroy of India, has intimated to tho Government his desire to bo relieved from his post. Ho has forwarded bis formal resignation, and holds tho office O-ily awaiting the .appointment of his suocesaor. While tho King of Burmah was suffering from small pox, orders were given for tho massacre of numbers of people in tho hope that the sacrifice would propitiate tho offended deities, and that Thaebaw’s life would be saved in this manner. No less than 700 persons were sacrificed. At Mandalay under tho excited spirit of fanaticism thus aroused, tho Catholic convent established in that city was attacked.
