FLOGGING IN LYTTELTON GAOL.
The prisoner, Peter Martin, who was sentenced at the last session o£ the Supreme Court to receive two whippings in addition to imprisonment, underwent the first portion, viz., twenty-five lashes, this morning. The prisoner, who exhibited some littlo amount of trepidation at the coming punishment, observable from the looks cast at the triangle, wag seized up in man-o'-war fashion to an iron triangle fitting into the stone work of one of the corridors in tho new part of the building. The chiof gaoler, Mr S. C. Phillips, Dr. Rous J, the visiting surgeon, and the wardens, were in attendance. Eleven o'clock was the time fixed, and with military punctuality Martin was brought from his cell and fastened up. Tho punishment then commenced. For the first five or six lashes there was no perceptible effect upon the back of the culprit, but at the seventh there were very evident marks of severe punishment vieible. From this to the end of the first dozen the prisoner evinced physical pain. At the twelfth stroke the first warder was relieved, and another one administered the remainder of the sentence. The latter portion was felt by tho prisoner most severely, as evinced by tho contortions of the body. When released the prisoner made no remark, and was reconducted to his cell. The administering of the second twenty-five lashes will take place one month from date.
