Carter Webb, late local manager for the New Zealand Insurance Company, was charged on remand with embezzling £6 17s, belonging to his employers. After some evidence had been taken accused admitted the charge and was sentenced to six months' imprisonment, with hard labor. DDNEDIN, April 16. Insurance on the Calypso.

The following is the ascertained list of insurances on the Calypso effected through Dunedin offices and firms: —Cargills, Gibbs and Co., per Marine Insurance Company of London, £16,000; do. per open policy, in London, £10,000; New Zealand and Austratralian .Land Company, per open policy in Glasgow, about £10,500 ; Victoria Ineuranoe Company, £5000; South British, £4000; Standard, £3OOO ; National, £2OOO ; Colonial, £2OOO ; Globe, £2000; Union. £1745; United, £112; total, £56,356. It has been stated that in addition the Batavia had a risk of £SOOO on the vessel, but the local agents (Messrs Bright Brothers and Co.) know nothing of it. The above insurances are on the cargo alone, the hull being underwritten in English offices. EducationalThe enforcement of the compulsory elanses of the Education Act has not appreciably affected the attendance at the schools in Dunedin. Railway Commission. The Boyal Commission on railways yesterday examined the Commissioner of Waste Lands, and Mr Grant, General Manager of Bail ways, and also received a deputation from the Chamber of Commerce, asking them to make full enquiry into the matter of the Otago Central Railway. Before leaving the Commissioners will inspect the works. On Tuesday morning they will leave Dunedin for Oamaru, arriving at noon. There they will take evidence on railway matters and examine the proposed Windsor and Livingstone line, and on Thursday the D untroon and Hakateramea line. The Commission will react Waimate on Thursday evening and take evidence re the proposed extension of the Waimate line through the Waiho valley.
